A Different Pokémon Master: The Path to Triva Championship

What was the first Pokémon ever created? This question, although simple on its surface, has the potential to spark debate in the Pokémon community. A casual fan might be tempted to respond with “Pikachu!” After all, who could imagine the decades-spanning franchise without its beloved electric mascot? However, hardcore fans of the series know that Pokémon trivia questions are rarely so simple.

The Challenge of Pokémon Trivia

Veteran Pokémon fans — the ones who followed Ash’s journey from his first steps into the Veridium Forest and who exchanged trading cards with their friends in search of the elusive holographic Charizard — might have a different answer to this question: What was the first Pokémon ever created? Many would answer with Mewtwo, the lab-created legendary Pokémon that made its appearance in the first generation of games. The answer isn’t so straightforward, however. With the franchise’s storied history, including dozens of video games, TV seasons, movies, comics, card games, and more, Pokémon trivia is no joke. Even a veteran might be surprised by the answer (hint: it’s not Mewtwo).

With Pokémon lore spanning so many years and genres of media, those hoping to impress their friends by taking a Pokémon quiz should consider brushing up on their knowledge of these iconic pocket monsters.

A Brief History of Pokémon

In February of 2024, Pokémon celebrated its 28th anniversary. Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, the franchise first launched as a video game series with the release of Pokémon Red and Green versions in Japan in 1996. The games became a hit, selling millions of copies. The market was expanded to the U.S. in 1998 with the release of versions Red and Blue. Since then, Nintendo has periodically released new generations of Pokémon games, each featuring new Pokémon for fans to catch, battle, and trade.

The success was not limited to video games. In 1996, the official Pokémon Trading Game (TCG) was created. The first set included 102 cards and has seen various expansions since. The card game experienced similar success, with an astounding 30 billion cards printed since its release, and some rare cards now being valued in the thousands.

In addition to games, Pokémon spread to other popular forms of media. The animated TV series, featuring the tenacious boy Ash Ketchum and his journey to becoming a Pokémon champion, launched in 1997. Since the show’s origins, it has included over 1,000 episodes across 23 series, as well as various movies and spinoffs.

Pokémon has only grown as a franchise, expanding into new markets. The games saw a worldwide revival in interest in 2016, due to the resounding success of the mobile game Pokémon Go. Today, Pokémon is cited as the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, earning upwards of $80.9 billion across its games, toys, media, playing cards, and more.

How Many Pokémon Are There?

The world of Pokémon has grown with each generational release. While the original Red, Blue, and Green game versions featured 150 Pokémon (or 151, depending on whether you count Mew), every generation has added to this number. Today, the official Pokédex names a staggering 1,025 Pokémon. Even this number doesn’t come without controversy, as regional forms, Mega Evolutions, and Gigantamax forms have muddied the understanding of what constitutes a new Pokémon.

For longtime fans of the franchise, naming every Pokémon was once a straightforward task. There was even a catchy theme song that could be used as an aid for memory. Nowadays, any Pokémon quiz that asks takers to recall every current Pokémon from memory presents a daunting task indeed. For those hoping to score high, it might be best to focus on the Pokémon that have had the largest impact on the franchise, such as Incineroar, which has dominated official competitions, or Arceus, the godlike legendary Pokémon.

A Constant Evolution

Pokémon can be a hard franchise to keep up with. Across multiple games, cards, plushies, and apps, there is only so much news even the most eager fans can follow. Aside from the main games, its successful auxiliary series have contributed to much of the Pokémon world’s evolution. Pokémon Go continues to draw fans, adding constant updates such as the appearance of Mega Legendary Pokémon

The series continues stretching to new horizons and markets, sometimes trending in unexpected ways. Pokémon Sleep, a new game originally announced in May 2019, tantalizes fans with a promise to turn “sleeping into entertainment” when it releases.

In addition to dozens of spinoffs, new core Pokémon games continue to be released. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is scheduled to be the next installment in 2025, with the possibility for new regional Pokémon and even new game mechanics.

Studying Beyond the Pokédex

With so much going on in the Pokémon world since its release and a climbing Pokémon count, even the most devout fans could struggle with a Pokémon quiz that goes beyond surface knowledge. Those hoping to prove their knowledge and skills as a Pokémon master might find help by shoring up their skills with online quizzes.

To garner more knowledge of Pokémon trivia, fans might focus on the biggest news in the most hard-hitting Pokémon crazes. Beyond the core games, it pays to keep track of world championships, card game releases, Pokémon Go updates, series finales, and more. Of course, the most natural way to accumulate your Pokémon knowledge is to continue doing what fans know best: loving this iconic franchise and the Pokémon in their parties that continue to bring them joy.
